One of the largest Special Economic Zone (SEZ) projects in India is coming up in Nanguneri in a 2500 acres area . This is the first multi-product SEZ in Tamil Nadu and the project is being implemented by AMRL Hitech City Ltd, a joint venture effort of AMR Group of Hyderabad and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO). The Central government has given its formal approval to this project in May 2007. The MoU has been signed between AMR Group and TIDCO on April 10, 2008. AMRL Hitech City Ltd has signed a MoU with Great Shine Engineering Private Ltd (GSEPL), a subsidiary of Zynergy Capital Private Ltd of Singapore for setting up a Rs 1,500 crore modern facility for manufacturing solar power peripherals in 40 acres.

A Japanese firm manufacutring high precision scales for use in research laboratories had completed two rounds of talks with the AMRL and would begin third round of talks shortly.

AMRL had concluded agreements with 15 industries, including a Dubai-based company for a total area of around 45 acres so far.

AMRL is all set to complete the first phase of infrastructure development on 30 acres of the 2,520 acre-SEZ.

The Special Economic Zone has been designed to provide SEZ IT Parks, Manufacturing Units, Residential Apartments, Plots, Water Treatment, Sewerage Treatment Plants, Un-Interrupted Power Supply and all other amenities. The SEZ consists of processing zone, spread over 1700 acres with industries and non-processing zone spread over 800 acres, which would house social infrastructure. The SEZ would have Information Technology & IT Enabled Services, Bio-Technology, Pharma, Electronics and Hardware, Engineering, Auto Components, Textiles, Logistics based companies. Nanguneri also lies on NH-7, which is part of the Four-Lane North-South Corridor Highway project connecting Kashmir to Kanyakumari.
